THE HOSPITAL WAITING room was small, and Peter had the good sense to return to the car after he’d carried Sadie through the front doors. I grabbed a magazine and flipped through it, the glossy images not even registering.

Anne reached out and attempted, unsuccessfully, to still my fingers. “What’s wrong?”

I intentionally misunderstood. “Sadie’s probably broken her arm. I can only hope she hasn’t broken anything else.”

“That’s not what I mean. Why did you run out of the restaurant?”

I leaned one way in my chair then the other, trying to release the pressure on my backside, running apologies through my mind, looking for one that didn’t make me look like an idiot. “I’m sorry.” While my fingers busily crumpled magazine pages, I searched for words and ended up with a version of the truth that I was willing to live with.

“I didn’t want to interfere with your date.” I shrugged as if to show how unimportant Peter was to me. “So I decided to leave.”

Anne blinked then set about explaining. “Peter’s my cousin. From New York. It wasn’t a date. He’s been visiting me for the past week.”

My eyes flew to her face, and I saw her truth. But I also saw my own. I couldn’t love Anne the way I did and be her friend too.

Before I could say more, a nurse appeared in the doorway, waving a piece of paper toward us. “Sadie’s ready to leave. I have some instructions here from the doctor about her arm. Is there someone to help her out until she’s back on her feet again?”

I jumped up. “Me. I’ll help her.” It was a relief to move away from Anne. To talk about something other than our friendship or Peter. To not think about my feelings for her.
